The beginning of the Gay Liberation

After the Second World War, homosexuality was considered as a mental disorder which was considered as chosen, abnormal, deviant, and unnatural sexual behavior. This sexual behavior was criminalized, and because of this gays and lesbians have to maintain a low profile. During those days there was any homosexual movement. The principal reason of this was that gays were always trying to survive in a homophobic world. During the second half of the 20th century, a series of events led the development of gay liberation movement.First during the 50's, Evelyn Hooker, a writer published a report called "The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual". In this report she shows that there was no pathological difference between homosexual men from heterosexual. All her investigation and her reports led the removal of the homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This and other texts make the homophobic society of that time change step by step all in their thinking form. The 1960s was a decade of lots of changes. During this time, there were born different counter-culture movements like anti-racism, anti-segregation, anti-sexism, anti-Vietnam war, pro-hippy, and anti-capitalism. All this movements help to create a perfect atmosphere for the development of gay liberation groups. The state began to pay attention to these movements and hear them. But there were also lot of trouble, because there were some police forces in North America in a kind of legal form of gay bashing on a regular basis. On 1969-June-27, in a NY bar called Stonewall Inn an irregular event take place. On that date a group of gays, lesbians, transsexual, etc., fought back with the police officers, throwing lipsticks, beer cans and different missiles. Since that happens all this kinds of protests were known as "Stonewall Riots".
